Working in the field poses both challenges and unexpected surprises. I can walk along for quite a while, and not come across the right moment, feeling or image and then suddenly, when least expected , you are presented with "it". When the moment is fleeting, (and light is quickly fading) I will often do a very fast oil sketch, concentrating only on the "abstract" and composition created by the major lights and darks, determine the major colour theme and then take a reference photograph. I also will take notes, trying to put into works the feeling, mood and atmosphere of the scene.
